The Wrap Around Story
What we do.
Our mission is to support people, by picking them up from where they are and helping them to rebuild their lives. It could be from prison or hospital; it could be from the streets. We help people apply for benefits. We register them with the doctors, and where necessary, drug and alcohol services and a chemist. During the first few weeks, we often have to feed them because they have no money. We care for them, provide accommodation and offer hope of a brighter future. For those who have been in prison, our intervention makes a difference during the critical early stages of release, when the risk of reoffending is at its highest. Our help has dramatically reduced reoffending rates among our tenants. We take people off the streets, find them secure accommodation and provide them with warmth and expert support as they gradually reintegrate into society. Of our tenants who have been long-term homeless, 95% do not return to where they came from. Some remain with us for 18 months or more.
Those First Small Steps.
For people who need help, the initial steps are the hardest to take. This is particularly the case for those who have spent many years leading a chaotic lifestyle, and know no other way. Adapting to what our society considers 'normal' or 'conventional' can be very challenging. As a charity, our task is to earn the trust of the people we wish to help, and vice-versa. When our tenants get paid, we encourage them to go shopping and also save a little money for the future. We urge them fill their fridges with food, and undertake jobs around the home like cleaning and painting. For some, just a little basic life-skills training can make all the difference.
The next rung on the ladder.
The ladder to reintegration and independent living is as long or short as it needs to be. Some people reach the top fairly quickly and move on, while for others, the process is a longer haul. There is no set pattern or formula – we respond to cases as we find them, delivering tailored care and support according to the circumstances. Some people are able to return to work; others are incapable of sustaining employment due to their illness or injury. Still, our care and ongoing support can relieve the financial burden placed on welfare state, including the NHS and benefits system.
